Character Information

Name: Annie Odair (née Cresta)

Name of Canon: The Hunger Games

Canon/AU/Other Game CR: Canon

Reference: Hunger Games Wiki / Wikipedia entry

Canon Point: Post-'Mockingjay': Annie comes from the end of the revolution, about two months after the death of Finnick. She's about 12/13 weeks pregnant, and has returned back to District 4.

Setting: Annie comes from a world called Panem, which is essentially a future version of Earth. In her Universe, society as we know it broke down completely during a series of plagues, famines, fires and wars (probably caused by environmental destruction). The remaining humans were left to fight for whatever resources remained, and in the end a very strictly structured society emerged. The governing power resided in a central Capitol, which was located in what was once referred to as the Rocky Mountains, and was surrounded by thirteen ‘Districts’. These were each responsible for a certain trade or activity, and provided these to the Capitol in return for protection and their leadership. It was an exploitive and repressive arrangement, and at one point the Districts rose up in rebellion of the Capitol. What followed was a horrendously brutal and violent war, which ended with victory for the Capitol and stricter measures set on the Districts to ensure their future compliance.

One of these new measures was the introduction of the ‘Hunger Games’. Once a year, the Districts were forced to offer up to ‘tributes’ to take part in the Games. The Tributes had to be one male and one female, and fall within the age range of 12 and 18, and once selected they were taken to the Capitol for the competition. The Games themselves were billed as ‘entertainment’ – not unlike reality shows in our current world. The Tributes received stylists and mentors (chosen from previous victors), and were interviewed and measured on television before being placed in an arena. There, on live television that was broadcast across Panem, they were forced to fight to the death until only one was left alive. The only surviving victor was then announced champion, and would receive rewards for themselves and their District. Every 25 years, there is a special Hunger Games to mark the anniversary of the Capitol’s victory over the rebels. These ‘Quarter Quell’s’ have slightly different rules from the annual games (More contestants, votes for tributes, etc.).

In some Districts – namely 1, 2 and 4 – the games were seen as a great honour, and there were always volunteers to take part. These young people became known as ‘Career’ Tributes, as they trained extensively for their Games and more often than not it was these Districts that provided winners. In other, usually less affluent, Districts, to be picked (Or ‘reaped’) was more like a death sentence, and the Tributes had to be chosen at random from a pot of names.

The canon for this Universe starts in the year of the 74th Hunger Games. These games were won by Katniss Evergreen and Peeta Mallark from District 12 – the first time the Capitol allowed a pair to win the Games. This came about once the two made the Capitol choose between letting them both win and having no victor at all. This manipulation of the Capitol and its Gamemakers stirred the pot in an already rebellious society, and several Districts fell out of line with their Government.

The next year was the 75th, which was a Quarter Quell year, and the Capitol announced that Tributes would be picked from those who were already victors. This once again ended with rebellion, and several Tributes breaking out of the arena. The land of Panem was soon split into two major groups – the rebels, who were located in the forgotten District 13, and the Capitol. There was a huge battle between the two sides, with both sides using dirty tactics as well as open warfare to try and ensure victory. In the end, the rebels were victorious, taking control of the Capitol and cancelling the Games completely, leaving the population of Panem to live under a democratic rule.

Annie is first introduced to Canon at around the time of the 75th Games. She was a victor of the 70th Hunger Games, but after watching her fellow District 4 tribute being decapitated in front of her, she went insane. Therefore she is something of a joke among the victors and Capitol, often referred to as ‘mad’ or ‘crazy’. She is the lover of Finnick Odair, who is one of the victors selected to compete in the Quarter Quell, and after the collapse of the Game is kidnapped by the Capitol to be used against him. She is eventually rescued and reunited with FInnick in District 13, where the pair are arried and Annie quickly falls pregnant. During the final push to the Capitol, however, Finnick is killed and Annie is left to return to District 4 alone.

Personality: (Revisions in bold)

Annie sometimes thinks of herself as two people – Annie before the arena and Annie after the arena. When she was growing up in District 4, she was the same as any other teenage girl. She was happy, friendly and intelligent, if perhaps a little quiet in comparison to some of the other girls in her class. Still she was funny  and got along with almost everyone, although she only had a few people that she actually classed as truely good friends - one of these was the boy who would eventually be a tribute alongside her in the 70th Hunger Games. Above all things, Annie was very sensitive. She felt things, and she cared a great deal about other people. This made her very empathetic and kind-hearted, willing to put herself out on a limb both for people she loved and for people she barely knew. District 4 tends to produce Career tributes as a rule, and yet Annie was reaped when she was seventeen. Not the kind of girl who would volunteer on her own accord, this meant there was no'one willing to step forward in her place, and so she was taken to the Capitol. This seems to hint at a girl who kept herself to herself, and didn't wish to fight or cause anyone any harm.

Annie's warm heart would ultimately be her undoing. The arena that year was a giant river valley, but Annie was too caring and felt too much pain every time she saw one of her fellow tributes killed during the Games. When her friend from home was murdered - decaptitated right in front of her - she simply couldn’t cope, and hid for the rest of the Games. In the end she won after the arena was flooded and Annie, having grown up by the sea, was the strongest swimmer - it's mentioned she had to tread water for days until the others all drowned. She's a natural survivor, and it was this ability to endure, rather than any skills in combat, that caused her to become a victor.

Once she was out of the arena, Annie was never the same. For several weeks she simply sat, staring at the wall, and although she eventually came back to reality, she was a changed girl. She was terrified - all the time. She suffered terrible, vivid and violent flashbacks that left her completely lost to the world around her and unable to tell the difference between what was real and what was imagined. When these happened Annie got into a habit of covering her ears and shutting her eyes tight in an attempt to block everything out, and often this is the only time she feels really safe. She would laugh at inappropriate moments in conversation and retreat into herself for hours or even days at a time, where she’d sit staring at nothing.  Annie’s never dangerous, but to those who don’t know her she can be quite frightening and disconcerting.

The task of comforting Annie usually falls on the shoulders of Finnick Odair. Finnick was her mentor when she was a contenstant in the Games, and the pair are almost co-dependantly in love with each other. Finnick is the one person who can drag her back in her worst moments, and they rely on each other an incredible amount. Annie's problems are usually triggered by mentions and reminders of the Games or the Capitol, such as when Johanna talks about being able to hear Peeta's screams when they were being held in cells.

However, Annie did come from from the Capitol during Mockingjay she was arguably the strongest of the three who were returned. Johanna and Peeta were deeply traumatised - perhaps after having recieved harsher treatment - but Annie realised she had to be as strong as she was able to be in order to take care of Finnick, who had not coped well with the separation. This showed that her basic good and loving nature is still unchanged. She also has strong moral ideas, as was shown when she voted against continuing the Hunger Games after the rebels took the Capitol. In the end Annie lost every member of her small family - Mags and Finnick - and yet continued on to bear (and will eventually raise) Finnick's child without falling completely to her grief and problems. This shows Annie had her own particular kind of emotional strength that perhaps is not the most obvious at first glance.

Abilities and Weaknesses:
STRENGTHS:

  • Talented when it comes to fishing and preparing fish.
  • Good with knots / Rope work.

  • A quick runner.
  • Hiding - If Annie doesn't want to be found, she won't be.
  • Kind-hearted.
  • Empathetic.

Annie does not have any real 'abilities' - she's a normal human girl. Therefore she doesn't really need any ability limitations placed on her.

Inventory: Annie is only arriving with the clothes on her back - a navy blue sundress and no shoes.

Appearance:  Described as 'lovely if somewhat bedraggled', Annie is a pretty young woman with long dark hair and green eyes. She's of of small height (Around 5'3") and build, although naturally on the skinnier side of healthy, although due to her pregnancy her stomach is slightly swollen. She has the look of someone who doesn't spend a lot of time worrying about her hysical appearance. On occasion she has a rather haunted appearance, with wide eyes and a pallid expression,

Samples

Log Sample: She'd been trying to be brave. She really, really had. She'd managed to move a little way from where they’d left her before her fear and the pressure in her head made her freeze on the spot. What was happening? Where was she? Annie shivered, still dressed in the sundress she'd been wearing back in Four. The weather had been warmer there, and goosebumps erupted over slim, bare limbs as she wrapped her arms around herself, whole body shaking gently.

She tried to find something to cling to, but there was a familiar darkness pushing up from the depths of her mind, threatening to swallow her and pull her away from reality. Annie didn’t like change, she didn’t have a coping mechanism for it any more. She’d been through enough of it in the last few months, but this just seemed like one thing too many. She was scared, and there didn’t seem to be anyone around who could help.

Wherever this was, it was big. And chaotic and strange. There were noises and lights and, and it reminded Annie of the arena, which made her throat close in panic. The sudden sense of displacement and the loss of any kind of direction made her whimper, and the dark haired girl sank slowly down to sit on the floor beneath her.

She pulled her knees into her chest, curling her whole body around the gentle swell of her stomach and the life that was growing inside her, protecting it automatically. She hadn’t meant to get pregnant – she and Finnick had been in thirteen when it had happened, and they weren’t really too big on birth control there. Now she was torn – it was terrifying, the idea of doing this on her own. But it was all she had left of Finnick, and for that she was breathtakingly grateful. And she wanted to protect it more than anything.

Annie lifted her hands to press them over her ears, hoping to block out some of the noise and panic that was multiplying inside her skull. She didn't like this. It hurt. She just... She didn't understand why everything had changed. Annie had been doing so well recently – despite losing her whole family, she’d done her best to keep hold of herself in the last few months. Had it been for nothing? Had she finally broken? All she wanted was for things to make sense. To have someone help her and find something to hold on to.

[AUDIO].

[Sound of fumbling, as if someone's been fiddling agitatedly with the device and has accidentally switched it on. There's a few beats of silence, before Annie seems to notice what's happened and attempts to speak.]

I... erm... Hello? Is anyone there?

I... don't know where i am. I think... I think I'm lost. I don't... I don't... [She trails off as he voice catches, but when she speaks again she's a little more hysterical.]

I think... I just need to go home, please. I won't tell anyone. I'll be quiet, and... I just... please. Please.
